History
Welcome to the South Arkansas Fire Protection District
The South Arkansas Fire Protection District (S.A.F.P.D.) has been proudly serving the community for over 70 years, with a deep commitment to safety, collaboration, and neighborly care. Working hand-in-hand with the Salida Fire Department under the leadership of the Salida Fire Chief, we form a united front in protecting both the City of Salida and the outlying areas.
Our shared mission is simple: to provide the highest standard of fire protection and emergency services for all who live in and around Salida. Two departments working as one ensures seamless service, combining our resources, skills, and dedication to keep the entire community safe.
The roots of S.A.F.P.D. trace back to the early 1960s, a time when fire protection beyond Salida’s city limits was uncertain. George W. Koenig, a local leader and dedicated community member, saw the need for change. In partnership with Fire Chief Woody Bennett and fellow citizens, George led the charge to create a fire district that would serve the outlying areas, ensuring no home or family went unprotected.
Thanks to the dedication of George and many others, S.A.F.P.D. was established, building a legacy of service and self-reliance that continues today. From the purchase of the district's first fire truck to the establishment of its base of operations, the district has grown into an essential part of the region’s emergency services.
Today, our partnership with the Salida Fire Department is stronger than ever. Together, we work around the clock to ensure rapid, effective responses to any fire or emergency, ensuring the safety of our friends, families, and neighbors.
