Wildland Mitigation & Firewise USA®
What is Firewise USA®?
Firewise USA® is a national recognition program developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help communities proactively reduce their risk of wildfire. It offers a proven, collaborative framework that empowers neighbors living in wildfire-prone areas to come together, get organized, and take meaningful steps to protect their homes and surroundings.
The program focuses on increasing the ignition resistance of homes, landscaping, and shared spaces—helping to prevent small fires from becoming devastating disasters. Through education, planning, and hands-on action, residents work together to create safer, more resilient neighborhoods.
Becoming a Recognized Firewise® Community
To be officially recognized as a Firewise® Site, a community must:
- Form a local Firewise board or committee
- Complete a wildfire risk assessment of the area
- Develop an action plan based on that assessment
- Invest a minimum amount of volunteer time or dollars in risk reduction efforts
- Host a community education or outreach event
- Submit annual renewal documentation to maintain good standing
Communities that meet these voluntary criteria each year are awarded "In Good Standing" status and may publicly identify themselves as a Firewise® USA Site—a clear signal of their commitment to wildfire preparedness and resident safety.
Why It Matters
Wildfires are a growing threat in the wildland-urban interface, especially in places like Chaffee County. Becoming a Firewise community:
- Reduces the likelihood of home loss during a wildfire
- Improves emergency response coordination
- Strengthens neighborhood relationships and communication
- May qualify residents for insurance benefits through participating providers
