Buttermilk Fire Response – Custer County

On Wednesday, March 18th the South Arkansas Fire Protection District, in coordination with Salida Fire Department, deployed resources to Custer County in support of the Buttermilk Fire. As part of a shared resources response with local law enforcement and partnering agencies, the District assigned both a structural engine and a Type 6 tactical tender to assist with ongoing operations.

Resources were dispatched at approximately 4:00 PM and operated alongside other emergency crews working to contain the fire. Personnel returned safely to the Salida area at approximately 10:30 PM.

The Buttermilk Fire has burned an estimated 60–80 acres of brush and timber. A visible glow may still be present in the area as suppression and monitoring efforts continue.

As of the latest update, fifteen homes remain under mandatory evacuation. Residents in and around the affected area are encouraged to stay informed, follow all official guidance, and be prepared.

South Arkansas Fire Protection District remains committed to supporting regional partners through cooperative response efforts. We appreciate the coordination between agencies and the dedication of all personnel working to protect lives and property.
