South Arkansas Fire Protection District Deploys Crews to Support Elk Fire Response in Northwest Colorado

Rio Blanco County, CO (August 2 - present)— As wildfires continue to intensify across western Colorado, the South Arkansas Fire Protection District (SAFPD) has mobilized to support the growing response to the Elk Fire burning near Meeker in Rio Blanco County.

On August 3, SAFPD deployed Engine 112  to assist firefighting efforts on the Elk Fire. A three-person crew—including two engine bosses and one firefighter—was assigned to the incident as part of an interagency mutual aid effort across the state. These highly trained personnel are now on the ground assisting with active suppression, structure protection, and perimeter control.

The Elk Fire was ignited by lightning on August 2, roughly 10 miles east of Meeker, and has since grown rapidly due to extremely dry fuels, dense vegetation, and gusty winds. As of August 6, the fire has burned approximately 7,750 acres and remains 0% contained. Fire behavior has been described as aggressive, with flame lengths and heat intensity making suppression efforts difficult in some areas.

Multiple structures have been lost, including at least two homes and one outbuilding, prompting mandatory evacuations and widespread road closures. The fire is threatening both public and private lands, including critical wildlife habitat and recreational areas. In response, Governor Jared Polis issued a disaster emergency declaration to free up state resources and support for local agencies.

In addition to SAFPD, hundreds of firefighters from across Colorado and neighboring states have responded. The fire is currently being managed by Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team Three, coordinating more than 290 personnel, dozers, engines, and air resources across rugged terrain.
