Through a cooperative agreement with the City of Salida, the South Arkansas Fire Protection District (S.A.F.P.D.) is committed to providing a safe environment and delivering the highest level of professional service to our residents and visitors.

HISTORY

For over 70 years, the South Arkansas Fire Protection District (S.A.F.P.D.) has proudly served our community with a steadfast commitment to safety, collaboration, and neighborly care. In partnership with the Salida Fire Department and under the leadership of the Salida Fire Chief, we work together as a unified force to protect both the City of Salida and its surrounding areas.

Our mission is clear: to deliver the highest standard of fire protection and emergency services to everyone in and around Salida. By combining our resources, expertise, and dedication, our two departments operate as one—ensuring seamless service and rapid response when it matters most.

S.A.F.P.D.’s roots go back to the early 1960s, a time when fire protection outside Salida’s city limits was limited. Recognizing this critical need, George W. Koenig—alongside Fire Chief Woody Bennett and other committed citizens—spearheaded the creation of a fire district that would extend vital protection to outlying communities. Their vision laid the foundation for what would become a legacy of service and resilience.

From acquiring the district’s first fire truck to establishing a permanent base of operations, the efforts of George and others helped build a department that has become an essential part of our region’s emergency response network.

Today, our alliance with the Salida Fire Department is stronger than ever. Together, we provide 24/7 coverage, delivering fast and effective responses to fires and emergencies with a shared focus on keeping our friends, families, and neighbors safe.

WHAT WE DO:

At the South Arkansas Fire Protection District (S.A.F.P.D.), we are dedicated to protecting lives, property, and natural resources through a wide range of fire and emergency services. Our team works in close partnership with the Salida Fire Department to ensure prompt, professional response across the City of Salida and surrounding communities.

Our key services include:

• Wildfire Prevention & Land Stewardship: Through our Ranch Hand Mitigation Program, we assist local ranchers with controlled burns to reduce wildfire risk and promote healthy pastureland.
• Emergency Deployments: Our crews are trained and ready to deploy with S.A.F.P.D. apparatus  both locally and nationally, answering the call to support other communities during wildfire and disaster emergencies.
• Community Education & Resources: We provide up-to-date fire restriction information, distribute educational materials, and work to raise awareness about fire safety and preparedness across the region.
